CLYNGAS is presented to the mayor of Alicante and the Valencian Business Confederation

The mayor of Alicante and the president of the Valencian Business Confederation (CEV), accompanied by other members of both institutions, have visited the Cemex cement factory in Alicante, where they have been able to learn about the decarbonization projects of the cement plant among the which CLYNGAS is found.

Both organizations have been received by the Vice President of Operations for Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa (EMEA), Fernando Enríquez, accompanied by the Director of Operations for Spain, Benjamín Cabrera and the plant director, Óscar Nasarre.

At the meeting, they were explained, among others, the “CLYNGAS” project, an initiative co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the ‘Innovation Fund Small Scale 2021’ – the only project selected in the Valencian Community in this call – that will allow The cement company will reduce its CO2eq emissions by up to 406,000 tons in 10 years, through the replacement of fossil fuels with a synthesis gas obtained from waste. This project will contribute, not only to the decarbonization of the Alicante factory, but also to ensuring that the products manufactured in the plant have a lower carbon footprint and, therefore, that the buildings and infrastructure that are built with these materials are more sustainable.

“CLYNGAS” is an innovative project that will replace part of the fuel used to manufacture clinker with a high-value gas, obtained through the gasification process of waste and byproducts from other industries. This technology will improve the ability to burn fuel derived from waste, increasing the substitution of fossil fuels, while avoiding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 5.5%, guaranteeing a stable process and high quality production in the Cemex cement plant in Alicante (Spain). This project is a relevant part of Cemex’s strategy and roadmap.

Future in Action to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Cemex representatives also presented other ongoing projects to the mayor. Among them a new installation, which will increase the use of CDR (Fuels Derived from Waste), the renewable energy park for self-consumption, or the carbon capture project for process emissions that are difficult to abate.

Both delegations toured the factory to learn first-hand about the cement manufacturing process and the positive impact that the aforementioned decarbonization projects will have.
